How to Grow an Avocado Tree

You probably remember growing avocados from pits as a child, or watching the roots begin to grow as the pit cracks and spreads open, making way for the stem. All you need to do is insert three or four toothpicks about one-third of the way into the avocado pit. Place it in a small container with about half an inch of water in it. Let it grow, freshening up the water from time to time, until the stem is about half a foot tall. Then, cut it back to about half its size. About three weeks later, remove the toothpicks and plant the pit in an open area or in a pot, with a bit of the top exposed from the soil.
